DESCRIPTION:Start times\n9:00am:  Check-in and bib pick-up opens\n10:00am:  10M and 10K races start \nCourse Description\nBoth courses showcase Grills Preserve in Westerly\, and the 10-Mile course also features beautiful trails\, bridges\, and riverfront in the Grills Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton.  The course is a mix of about 80% single-track and 20% double-track. \nLocation\nBoth courses start and finish at Grills Preserve\, Westerly.  Due to parking limitations\, carpooling is encouraged and registration will be capped at 100 runners. \nRequirement \nEach participant and volunteer must wear at least 200 square inches of orange.  Anyone not wearing orange will not be allowed to race per State of RI DEM mandate. \nFor more information and/or to sign up click HERE.

No artistic skill required! \nWhy Join? \n\nDeepen your connection to the natural world\nBoost curiosity\, mindfulness\, and appreciation for the environment\nReduce stress through quiet observation\nLearn about plants\, animals\, and landscapes in a creative\, personal way\nDocument your outdoor experiences in a meaningful way\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\nWear flourescent orange hat and/or vest\nA notebook or sketchbook\nPens or pencils\nOptional: colored pencils\, markers\, binoculars\, magnifying glass\nSomething light and portable to sit on (e.g. a small camp chair\, folding stool\, or cushion) to make your time journaling outdoors more comfortable.\n\nLed by Jonah Salsich\, a Westerly resident and experienced elementary teacher of over 18 years\, who is also an amateur naturalist and artist. After discovering the power of nature journaling\, he has blended his passions for teaching\, observing\, and creating into a practice that sparks wonder and connection. With experience in both journaling and leading nature journaling workshops\, he is excited to invite others on this rewarding journey. \nThis is a relaxed\, no-pressure group. We’re here to share inspiration\, spend time outdoors\, and grow our sense of wonder together—one page at a time. \nParking is available in the field at Wahaneeta Preserve. DESCRIPTION:A walking tour of the WLT’s Dr. John Champlin Glacier Park featuring wooded trails with gentle hills and some rocky sections. This site’s unique geological features are worth the trip. Meet at the trailhead off of Tom Harvey Road just outside the entrance to Winnapaug Cottages. Please park in the designated area outside of the Winnapaug Cottages gate or in the parking lot across the street.  Please let the hike leader know you will be joining!  \nLeader: Janice Fifer Phone: 401-213-6479 Email: jhfifer@verizon.net  \nImportant Notes  \n\nDistance/ Target Group: Walks are 1 ½ to 3 hours and are open to all ages with the target group being agile seniors. \n\n\nEstimated Times: Ending times are estimated as it is difficult to ascertain when it will finish due to number of people\, how fast/slow the hikers walk\, etc. Hikes leave promptly.  \n\n\nInclement weather: Inclement weather cancels and if in doubt\, contact the leader.  \n\n\nDogs: If you wish to bring a dog\, contact the leader as some properties do not allow them. If a dog is present\, they must be leashed at all times.  \n\n\nTrail Safety: These are wooded trails with stumps\, roots and rocks so be sure to wear hiking boots or good walking shoes. DESCRIPTION:Join WildRoots and The Westerly Land Trust (WLT) for a collaborative morning of exploration\, discovery\, and play!\n\n\nWe’re teaming up as neighbors to bring young naturalists a unique experience that begins at Barlow Nature Preserve and ends with creative free play at WildRoots. \nWe’ll start our journey with an engaging\, hands-on lesson about animal tracks and signs\, led by our WLT team. Then we’ll head out on a guided hike through the preserve\, using our new skills to look for evidence of wildlife all around us. After our hike\, we’ll arrive at WildRoots where children will enjoy open-ended nature play at thoughtfully designed free play stations. \nThis program encourages curiosity\, observation\, and creativity\, all while connecting with the natural world. This program is open to children ages 5-10. \nAbout the Hosts \nWildRoots Play is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a community where children and families can nurture connection\, holistic development\, and Earth stewardship through immersive experiences in nature and play. \nThe Westerly Land Trust is a nonprofit organization committed to conserving open space\, revitalizing neighborhoods\, and building community in Westerly\, Rhode Island. Our partnership blends playful discovery with embedded teaching\, helping children build knowledge naturally as they explore. By connecting families to the land and encouraging stewardship\, we hope to inspire the next generation to care for—and protect—the wild places around them. \nEach session invites children and their families to slow down\, look closely\, and discover the magic of the natural world together. DESCRIPTION:For something different\, this 4-5 mile walk will be a point-to-point (one way) walk\, visiting a few highlights in both the Grills Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton and the Grills Preserve in Westerly. Most of the trail will be on flat single-track\, but there are some hilly sections. Hopefully not an issue\, but please note this walk only works if you’re willing to have someone ride in your car in one direction\, and ride in someone else’s in the opposite direction. Meet and park in the Grills Preserve dirt parking lot at 198 Bowling Lane\, Westerly. Come walk\, wonder\, and grow with us.\n\n\nWe are teaming up with our friends from WildRoots once a month for Wednesday Wonder Walks\, a guided family hiking series curated to spark curiosity and nurture a lifelong love of nature. Our partnership blends playful discovery with embedded teaching\, helping children build knowledge naturally as they explore. By connecting families to the land and encouraging stewardship\, we hope to inspire the next generation to care for—and protect—the wild places around them. \nEach session invites children and their families to slow down\, look closely\, and discover the magic of the natural world together. Every month features a new theme and a new Westerly Land Trust property\, giving young explorers the chance to get to know their local environment in a meaningful and memorable way. \nMarch’s theme is Sprout Scouts and will be held at Barlow Nature Preserve. We will head out on a wonder walk to search for early signs of life waking beneath the cold New England landscape. Along our walk we invite you to look closely for swelling buds\, stubborn green shoots pushing through the soil\, moss on rocks\, and tiny seedlings glowing in sunny patches. With careful observation and curious minds\, we will discover how plants prepare for spring long before the weather warms. SUMMARY:Spring Equinox Yoga Hike
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring and embark on a mindful adventure through the forest where we will practice yoga and welcome new beginnings.\n\n\nThe Spring Equinox is a perfect time to get outside and take notice of nature during a period of rapid change and vibrant growth. Join hike leader and local yoga teacher\, Janice Fifer\, for a grounding experience through the forest of Grills Preserve. \nThis experience will begin at the trailhead with centering and a short breathing practice\, followed by a mindful walk to the Polly Coon Bridge where we will meditate with the sounds of the river rushing over the rocks. On your way to Big Hill\, we invite you to draw inspiration from plants and animals that reawaken this time of year. A series of standing yoga poses will be strategically sprinkled into this experience throughout the hike where we will pause to stretch\, breathe\, and balance amongst the trees. \nWe will cover ~ 3 miles total. No need for a yoga mat. Consider bringing an old towel or garden kneeling cushion to make sitting on the ground more comfortable. \n \n\nAll levels welcome\, no yoga experience necessary.\n\n\nRegistration required; spots are limited.\n\n\nThis event is at NO COST to WLT members\, and $10 per person for non-members\, which Janice has generously pledged to donate to WLT.\n\n\nNot a member and would like to be?
