SUMMARY:4th Annual WLT Mini BioBlitz at Champlin Farm Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Calling all curious humans! Let’s get out there and find all the life that surrounds us\, both small and large.\n\n\nA BioBlitz is an event that focuses on discovering and identifying as many living species as possible. From fungi to trees\, mammals to insects\, and everything in between\, we will try to catch ‘em all– this time at WLT’s latest conserved property\, the 90-acre Champlin Farm Preserve! \nThis is a great opportunity to explore the fields\, forests\, rocky outcroppings\, and riverbank of our newest property. Our stewardship group\, the CCC\, has been hard at work removing invasives and clearing trails. There is also a 7-acre gravel pit on the property that promises some interesting finds\, despite its disturbed nature. \nThis is a FREE\, all-ages\, all-abilities\, and family-friendly event – it doesn’t matter if you are an expert naturalist or have never stepped into the woods before. The event begins at 10am and we will romp\, collect\, and explore until 2 pm. If you’d like to explore before the event starts or after it ends\, you are more than welcome to! Just let us know so we can make sure you know the lay of the land. \nParticipants are encouraged to pack a lunch. Light snacks\, water\, and refreshments will be available as well. We will all take a break\, swap stories\, and have lunch together at noon. \nThere are some great tools out there\, besides field guides and experts\, that can help you identify all kinds of different plants and animals. Be sure to download apps like iNaturalist from the App Store. Play around with them beforehand and be sure to show up with a full battery! \nThe link to the official iNaturalist project will be coming soon! \nIf you have any questions\, send ’em over to Marc (mdoherty@westerlylandtrust.org)

SUMMARY:Volunteer Stewardship Day at Grills
DESCRIPTION:Help protect unique and rare plant populations from invasives in Grills Preserve!\n\n\nLet’s take a few hours on Mother’s Day to celebrate our common matriarch\, Mother Earth! Everyone is welcome to help us protect unique and rare plant populations in Grills Preserve from invasive plants like garlic mustard\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and round leaf bittersweet.  \n We will take a 1.5-mile hike to a small\, rocky hilltop to hand-pull invasive plants before they outcompete some unique early-season perennial wildflowers. On our walk back to the trailhead\, we might stop by a few small meadows and cut back woody growth while looking for signs of other important native wildflowers.  \n Come prepared for a couple of hours in the woods with weather-appropriate clothing\, work gloves\, loppers\, tick and sun protection\, and water.   \nEmail WLT’s Land Stewardship Manager\, Marc\, at mdoherty@westerlylandtrust.org with any questions.  \n  \nThank you for helping steward our lands\, and don’t forget to bring your mother!

SUMMARY:Serviceberry Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Westerly Library & Wilcox Park and in celebration of Earth Day\, please join us to discuss the book Serviceberry.\n\n\nIn partnership with the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park\, and as part of the Westerly Land Trust’s celebration of Earth Day\, we invite you to join our Serviceberry Book Club. \nYou may be familiar with Braiding Sweetgrass\, Robin Wall Kimmerer’s 2013 book that blended Indigenous wisdom and scientific ecology. Serviceberry is her 2024 follow-up; it dives deeper into connections between Indigenous knowledge\, ecology\, and the natural world. Through storytelling\, Kimmerer examines the lessons imparted by plants and ecosystems\, especially the serviceberry\, emphasizing reciprocity\, healing\, and the intertwined relationships between humans and nature. \nWe’re sharing this event now to give you ample time to read the book. If you don’t have a copy of Serviceberry\, head to Westerly Library and Wilcox Park to pick one up (2nd floor\, Reference Department). They have generously donated copies for the first 20 program participants. \n \nFor the day of the event\, come prepared to discuss the book in the cozy Wahaneeta cabin. Then we’ll all go for a hike through the woods of Wahaneeta Preserve. \n \n\nThis event is NO COST\nNot a WLT member yet\, but would like to be?
