River Rangers
Join WLT educators to explore the plants and animals that call the river home. Use a dip net to trap and observe these animals in their natural habitat. Discover the important role rivers play on our Earth. Grade 3 – 4 will have the opportunity to perform a water salinity test using more advanced technology!

Summer 2023
Join Westerly Land Trust educators for an 8-week hands on adventure to explore the great outdoors. Step into the boots of a new scientist or steward each Thursday to discover the weird and wild plants, animals and phenomena that make Westerly our beautiful home. Grade 3 & 4 will dive deeper into exploration using more advanced technology.
- Program is FREE thanks to a partnership with WPS
- Participants must attend a WPS Elementary School (SES, DCS, SSS)
- All Summer programs are located at Barlow Nature Preserve
- Pick up and drop off is required
- By signing up you are registering for an 8-week adventure that meets on Thursdays from 6/22- 8-10

- Flying Squirrels (Grade K-2) program is from 9:30 AM -11:30 AM
- Soaring Hawks (Grade 3-4) program is from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Summer Adventure Descriptions
(6/22) Science Sleuths: Have you ever wondered what animals are lurking in the forest’s camouflage? Put your detective skills to the test as you explore the career of a Park Ranger. Hunt for animal tracks, habitats and more to identify the creatures that live around you.
(6/29) Bio Blitz: Dive into the field of ecology and survey Barlow Nature Preserve to determine the plants, animals, and insects that call it home. Discover the important role of biodiversity for the survival of our ecosystem.
(7/6) Farming with Friends: Did you know agriculture is the world’s largest industry?! Everyone needs to eat, so being a farmer is a very important role in our economy. Explore eco-friendly farming practices and how to nurture plants!
(7/13) Species Seekers: Discover the world of native and invasive species through the lens of a botanist. Embark on a hike through the forest to identify different species and learn how to best steward our local habitat.
(7/20) Genuine Geologists: Did you know Westerly is known for its booming granite industry? Excavate and discover different types of rocks, fossils, and minerals through hands-on exploration. As a geologist you will collect samples and examine them using technology to classify what you found.
(7/27) Brilliant Biologist: Uncover the secrets of where animals live and what makes their habitat theirs. As a wildlife biologist you will explore the interactions of animals and humans in an ecosystem.
(8/3) Wacky Weather: Did you know that 1 billion tons of water falls on Earth every minute? Weather phenomena occur every day in our atmosphere that have tremendous effects on humans and ecosystems. Step into the shoes of a meteorologist to study, discover and make sense of the wonderful and wacky weather in Westerly.
(8/10) Scales, Shells, and Slime: Almost all reptiles and amphibians are cold blooded needing warmth from the sun, unlike us as humans, who are warm-blooded and can control our own body temperature. Today you will get a glimpse of the wonderful world of a herpetologist and study everything there is to know about scaley, shelly, and slimy critters.
