SUMMARY:Wednesday Wonder Walk - Sprout Scouts
DESCRIPTION:March’s theme is Sprout Scouts. Come walk\, wonder\, and grow with us.\n\n\nWe are teaming up with our friends from WildRoots once a month for Wednesday Wonder Walks\, a guided family hiking series curated to spark curiosity and nurture a lifelong love of nature. Our partnership blends playful discovery with embedded teaching\, helping children build knowledge naturally as they explore. By connecting families to the land and encouraging stewardship\, we hope to inspire the next generation to care for—and protect—the wild places around them. \nEach session invites children and their families to slow down\, look closely\, and discover the magic of the natural world together. Every month features a new theme and a new Westerly Land Trust property\, giving young explorers the chance to get to know their local environment in a meaningful and memorable way. \nMarch’s theme is Sprout Scouts and will be held at Barlow Nature Preserve. We will head out on a wonder walk to search for early signs of life waking beneath the cold New England landscape. Along our walk we invite you to look closely for swelling buds\, stubborn green shoots pushing through the soil\, moss on rocks\, and tiny seedlings glowing in sunny patches. With careful observation and curious minds\, we will discover how plants prepare for spring long before the weather warms. After exploring\, we will sow seeds to give new life a gentle head start for the seasons to come. \n\nPrograms are NO COST thanks to generous community support\nRegistration is required for all participants\nAn adult must accompany their child/children during program. SUMMARY:Westerly Land Trust Farm Dinner- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:The Westerly Land Trust 2025 Farm Dinner is now SOLD OUT!\nLast year\, to focus on permanently protecting the 90-acre Champlin Farm Preserve\, we pressed pause on the Farm Dinner. This year\, in celebration of this success and all the work we do to connect our community with local agriculture\, we are bringing back the Farm Dinner concept—celebrating the bounty of the land by dining together al fresco—with some exciting new twists. \nFirst\, this will be a smaller\, more intimate experience held at Barlow Nature Preserve\, which has been our “home base”\, our “hub”\, our “headquarters” since we moved here in 2020. For five years\, we have gotten to know this beautiful landscape\, and helped it grow into a centerpiece of our work\, complete with two vibrant working farms\, Frontier Farm and Echo Rock Flowers\, a farm stand\, and the heart of our youth education program. \nAnd\, rather than dividing the courses among different chefs\, Julian ElFedayni-Connell from Tin Peddler in Stonington and Barbary Coast in Mystic will be curating the entire dinner which is sure to please. \nSo join us for our 2025 Farm Dinner on Saturday\, September 13th beginning at 3:30pm — gather with friends and neighbors out on the land and enjoy a fabulous meal entirely prepared with local ingredients. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the table! \nSpecial Thanks to the 2025 Farm Dinner’s Presenting Sponsor: South County Tourism Council \n \n

SUMMARY:Spring Birding in Westerly
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture-style event to explore migratory birds you can see during Spring in our town!\n\n\nLove birds and want to see more of them? Spring is a great time to explore migratory (birds that aren’t always here) birds in our town. Avid birder\, Barbara Seith\, will take you through several birds you might be able to see and hear in Westerly from April through June. \n \n\nThis event is lecture-style\, held in a “classroom” setting in the Barlow Nature Preserve boardroom. There is an “in-field” event coming up on May 2 Early Spring Birding at Avondale Farm Preserve. While Spring Birding in Westerly is not a required prerequisite\, it is excellent background information to prepare you for what you might see on our birding walk. We invite you to register for both!\nNO COST for WLT members and $10 for non-members\, which Barbara has generously pledged to donate to WLT.\nNot a WLT member yet\, but would like to be? CLICK HERE.\n\nParking is available in the main parking lot at Barlow Nature Preserve\, with overflow parking in the field behind the outbuildings to the east (up the farm road).

SUMMARY:Cemetery 101
DESCRIPTION:RI is a special spot for historic cemeteries. Learn why in this discussion led by the RI Historic Cemetery Commissioner Larry Hunter.\n\n\nDid you know that Rhode Island designates April and May as “Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks” or that there are nearly 90 cemeteries in Westerly and approximately 3\,200 in the whole state? Join us for an informative discussion of “Cemetery 101” led by Larry Hunter\, WLT Volunteer and RI Historic Cemetery Commissioner. Larry will dig into the history of RI cemeteries and discuss the orientation and types of headstones\, the use of footstones and field stones\, and the types of stones and various materials. He will also review the dos and don’ts of visiting cemeteries and the cleaning\, maintenance\, restoration\, and preservation of stones. \n \n\nThis event is lecture style\, held in a “classroom” setting in the Barlow Nature Preserve boardroom. There are two “in the field” events coming up on April 30 (Quaker Burial Ground) and May 7 (Grills Preserve)\, and while Cemetery 101 is not a required prerequisit for either\, it is excellent background information. We invite you to register for all three!\nNO COST for WLT members and $10 for non-members\, which Larry has generously pledged to donate to WLT.\nNot a WLT member yet\, but would like to be?
