DESCRIPTION:Nature-themed books and hands-on fun for kids every Tuesday in August!\n\n\nJoin us for Storytime in the Garden\, a gentle and engaging outdoor program designed for children to connect with nature through books and hands-on fun. Each session is offered on Tuesdays through the month of August (8/5\, 8/12\, 8/19\, 8/26) and features a read-aloud of a beautifully illustrated\, nature-themed story -celebrating wildlife\, flowers\, pollinators\, and the outdoors. After the story\, participants are invited to enjoy a simple\, hands-on activity inspired by the book. From binoculars to plants and bug vacuums\, every week offers a new way to explore\, create\, and imagine. \nBest for ages 5 and under\, but open to all. Parents/caregivers are required to attend and encouraged to participate. With expert guidance from Cail Calder of Westerbee honey\, aka “The Beeman“\, you’ll learn how to diagnose potential issues and make informed decisions to keep your bees thriving. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll: \n\nGet an in-depth look at how to properly open and inspect a beehive\, including safety tips for working with bees;\nLearn how to identify the queen\, brood patterns\, and honey stores\, and how to assess colony health based on these indicators;\nUnderstand how to spot signs of disease\, pests\, or other potential problems within the hive;\nPractice recognizing the symptoms of common issues like mite infestations\, queen failure\, and hive overcrowding;\nGain skills in handling frames and using equipment such as smokers\, hive tools\, and protective gear;\nLearn how to record your findings and track the progress of your colony over time;\nUnderstand when and how to intervene with appropriate actions like mite treatments\, adding new frames\, or expanding the hive.\n\nThis event is second in a 3-part series. While Setting Up Your Hive (March 27) is not a required prerequisit for this event\, it offers excellent background information. Learn why in this discussion led by the RI Historic Cemetery Commissioner Larry Hunter.\n\n\nDid you know that Rhode Island designates April and May as “Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks” or that there are nearly 90 cemeteries in Westerly and approximately 3\,200 in the whole state? Join us for an informative discussion of “Cemetery 101” led by Larry Hunter\, WLT Volunteer and RI Historic Cemetery Commissioner. Larry will dig into the history of RI cemeteries and discuss the orientation and types of headstones\, the use of footstones and field stones\, and the types of stones and various materials. He will also review the dos and don’ts of visiting cemeteries and the cleaning\, maintenance\, restoration\, and preservation of stones. \n \n\nThis event is lecture style\, held in a “classroom” setting in the Barlow Nature Preserve boardroom. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we sharpen our stewardship skills and familiarize ourselves with some common invasive woody plants.\n\n\nIdentifying plants can be hard. Differentiating between an invasive plant and a native plant in the winter when neither has leaves is even harder! \nJoin us as we sharpen our stewardship skills and familiarize ourselves with some common invasive woody plants. We will look at buds\, twigs\, bark\, shape and more as we train our eyes to decipher friend from foe during the quickly ending winter dormancy. DESCRIPTION:Learn a new gardening skill and bring home some native plants for your garden!\n\n\nWait\, seed sowing in January? Yep\, it’s winter and that means it’s time to sow native seeds. This is a great activity for all ages and an awesome way to get excited about the growing season during these long winter nights. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nOne of the best ways to support local biodiversity is to grow native plants. Growing native plants from seed is a bit different than starting seeds for your vegetable garden — most native seeds require a period of cold\, moist stratification so they can germinate come spring. \nWe are proud to have two native plant allies joining us to help out — Betsy Lennon (RI Wild Plant Society) and George Christie (RI Natural History Survey\, NPT Plant Conservation Volunteer\, Diptera enthusiast). While we will have shelter in the greenhouse or garage\, things might be a bit chilly\, so dress accordingly. A fire\, hot drinks and new friends will also help keep us warm. \nThis event is NO COST for all attendees\, donation is optional. Get ready to hit the trails and discover hidden treasure amongst the forest and the art of map making. \n\nRegistration closes the Friday before program at 9AM\nLocation: Barlow Nature Preserve\nThis program is for State Street School students\nNO COST thanks to generous community support\nTransportation: All students are bussed to program after school.
