SUMMARY:Spring Equinox Yoga Hike
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of Spring and embark on a mindful adventure through the forest where we will practice yoga and welcome new beginnings.\n\n\nThe Spring Equinox is a perfect time to get outside and take notice of nature during a period of rapid change and vibrant growth. Join hike leader and local yoga teacher\, Janice Fifer\, for a grounding experience through the forest of Grills Preserve. \nThis experience will begin at the trailhead with centering and a short breathing practice\, followed by a mindful walk to the Polly Coon Bridge where we will meditate with the sounds of the river rushing over the rocks. On your way to Big Hill\, we invite you to draw inspiration from plants and animals that reawaken this time of year. A series of standing yoga poses will be strategically sprinkled into this experience throughout the hike where we will pause to stretch\, breathe\, and balance amongst the trees. \nWe will cover ~ 3 miles total. No need for a yoga mat. Consider bringing an old towel or garden kneeling cushion to make sitting on the ground more comfortable. \n \n\nAll levels welcome\, no yoga experience necessary.\n\n\nRegistration required; spots are limited.\n\n\nThis event is at NO COST to WLT members\, and $10 per person for non-members\, which Janice has generously pledged to donate to WLT.\n\n\nNot a member and would like to be? Come walk\, wonder\, and grow with us!\n\n\nWe are teaming up with our friends from WildRoots once a month for Wednesday Wonder Walks\, a guided family hiking series curated to spark curiosity and nurture a lifelong love of nature. Our partnership blends playful discovery with embedded teaching\, helping children build knowledge naturally as they explore. By connecting families to the land and encouraging stewardship\, we hope to inspire the next generation to care for—and protect—the wild places around them. \nEach session invites children and their families to slow down\, look closely\, and discover the magic of the natural world together. Every month features a new theme and a new Westerly Land Trust property\, giving young explorers the chance to get to know their local environment in a meaningful and memorable way. \nJanuary’s theme is Feathered Friends and will be held at Grills Preserve. Through playful discovery\, gentle guidance\, and curiosity-driven exploration\, we will set out on a wonder walk to search for feathers\, tracks\, nests\, and other clues that reveal which birds call our preserve home. Along the way\, young naturalists will practice careful observation\, deepen their connection to the winter landscape\, and uncover the hidden stories carried on the wings of local birdlife. \n\n Programs are NO COST thanks to generous community support\nRegistration is required for all participants\n\n\nAn adult must accompany their child/children during program. SUMMARY:Thursday Hike: Grills to Grills
DESCRIPTION:For something different\, this 4-5 mile walk will be a point-to-point (one way) walk\, visiting a few highlights in both the Grills Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton and the Grills Preserve in Westerly. Most of the trail will be on flat single-track\, but there are some hilly sections. Hopefully not an issue\, but please note this walk only works if you’re willing to have someone ride in your car in one direction\, and ride in someone else’s in the opposite direction. Meet and park in the Grills Preserve dirt parking lot at 198 Bowling Lane\, Westerly. DESCRIPTION:Start times\n9:00am:  Check-in and bib pick-up opens\n10:00am:  10M and 10K races start \nCourse Description\nBoth courses showcase Grills Preserve in Westerly\, and the 10-Mile course also features beautiful trails\, bridges\, and riverfront in the Grills Wildlife Sanctuary in Hopkinton.  The course is a mix of about 80% single-track and 20% double-track. \nLocation\nBoth courses start and finish at Grills Preserve\, Westerly.  Due to parking limitations\, carpooling is encouraged and registration will be capped at 100 runners. \nRequirement \nEach participant and volunteer must wear at least 200 square inches of orange.  Anyone not wearing orange will not be allowed to race per State of RI DEM mandate. \nFor more information and/or to sign up click HERE.

DESCRIPTION:Help protect unique and rare plant populations from invasives in Grills Preserve!\n\n\nLet’s take a few hours on Mother’s Day to celebrate our common matriarch\, Mother Earth! Everyone is welcome to help us protect unique and rare plant populations in Grills Preserve from invasive plants like garlic mustard\, Japanese honeysuckle\, and round leaf bittersweet.  \n We will take a 1.5-mile hike to a small\, rocky hilltop to hand-pull invasive plants before they outcompete some unique early-season perennial wildflowers. On our walk back to the trailhead\, we might stop by a few small meadows and cut back woody growth while looking for signs of other important native wildflowers.  \n Come prepared for a couple of hours in the woods with weather-appropriate clothing\, work gloves\, loppers\, tick and sun protection\, and water.   \nEmail WLT’s Land Stewardship Manager\, Marc\, at mdoherty@westerlylandtrust.org with any questions.  \n  \nThank you for helping steward our lands\, and don’t forget to bring your mother!

DESCRIPTION:Honor “Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks” with WLT volunteer and RI Historic Cemetery Commissioner\, Larry Hunter.\n\n\nJoin WLT Land Stewardship Manager Marc Doherty and WLT volunteer and RI Historic Cemetery Commissioner Larry Hunter for a hike and historic cemetery tour at Grills Preserve. We will start our adventure on the Blue Trail\, continue along the dyke and the Pawcatuck River with a stop at the Polly Coon Bridge for a scenic overlook that stretches over the river and connects WLT Grills Preserve to Hopkinton Grills Preserve. Then we’ll venture on to Clark Hiscox Lot where Larry will show ongoing conservation and preservation work in the cemetery. Bring along your camera and some water and a little snack. \n \n\nTours are recommended for adults.\nThis event is third in a 3-part series. While Cemetery 101 (April 22) and the Historic Cemetery Tour (April 30) are not required prerequisits for this hike\, they both offer excellent background information. We should be able to see most of the popular attractions\, including the Polly Coon Bridge\, the Larkin Foundation dating from the 1660s\, and views from Big Hill after a short but steep climb. Meet at the parking lot at the cul-de-sac at the end of Bowling Lane in Bradford Village. \n
