SUMMARY:WLT/WildRoots Wednesday Wonder Walk
DESCRIPTION:December’s theme is Terrific Tree’s. Come walk\, wonder\, and grow with us!\n\nDecember’s theme is Terrific Trees. Come walk\, wonder\, and grow with us! \nWe are teaming up with our friends from WildRoots once a month for Westerly Land Trust & WildRoots Wednesday Wonder Walks\, a guided family hiking series curated to spark curiosity and nurture a lifelong love of nature. Our partnership blends playful discovery with embedded teaching\, helping children build knowledge naturally as they explore. By connecting families to the land and encouraging stewardship\, we hope to inspire the next generation to care for—and protect—the wild places around them. \nEach session invites children and their families to slow down\, look closely\, and discover the magic of the natural world together. Every month features a new theme and a new Westerly Land Trust property\, giving young explorers the chance to get to know their local environment in a meaningful and memorable way. \nDecember’s theme is Terrific Trees and will be held at Wahaneeta Preserve. Through hands-on exploration\, gentle guidance\, and curiosity-led investigations\, children will learn how to identify local tree species\, observe seasonal changes\, and uncover the hidden stories that forests hold. \n– Programs are NO COST thanks to generous community support \n– Registration is required for all participants \n– An adult must accompany their child/children during program \nParking is available in the field at Wahaneeta Preserve. Turn in at the sign for Trombino Ball Field\, follow the dirt road past the fields\, and stay to the left. Continue left past the Wahaneeta sign and up through the dirt parking lot. Stay left as you go through the gate and park in the field. \nAbout the Hosts \nWildRoots Play is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a community where children and families can nurture connection\, holistic development\, and Earth stewardship through immersive experiences in nature and play. \nThe Westerly Land Trust (WLT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to conserving open space\, revitalizing neighborhoods\, and building community in Westerly\, Rhode Island. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, awaken your senses and connect with Nature as you luxuriate in a Forest Bath!\n\n\nJoin Deirdre O’Connor for a slow and easy walk in Wahaneeta Preserve. Forest Bathing is the pleasant practice of spending time in nature to enhance health and happiness. Forest Bathing also offers us the opportunity to deepen our relationship with the natural world. \nYou will be walking slowly for about one mile on mostly flat but uneven forest trails as you are offered a series of invitations to explore the landscape with your senses and connect with the natural world. We will be walking and sitting for 2 hours and will finish our walk by sharing tea together. This experience is open to ages 15 and up. \n  \n\nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Serviceberry Book Club
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Westerly Library & Wilcox Park and in celebration of Earth Day\, please join us to discuss the book Serviceberry.\n\n\nIn partnership with the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park\, and as part of the Westerly Land Trust’s celebration of Earth Day\, we invite you to join our Serviceberry Book Club. \nYou may be familiar with Braiding Sweetgrass\, Robin Wall Kimmerer’s 2013 book that blended Indigenous wisdom and scientific ecology. Serviceberry is her 2024 follow-up; it dives deeper into connections between Indigenous knowledge\, ecology\, and the natural world. Through storytelling\, Kimmerer examines the lessons imparted by plants and ecosystems\, especially the serviceberry\, emphasizing reciprocity\, healing\, and the intertwined relationships between humans and nature. \nWe’re sharing this event now to give you ample time to read the book. If you don’t have a copy of Serviceberry\, head to Westerly Library and Wilcox Park to pick one up (2nd floor\, Reference Department). They have generously donated copies for the first 20 program participants. \n \nFor the day of the event\, come prepared to discuss the book in the cozy Wahaneeta cabin. Then we’ll all go for a hike through the woods of Wahaneeta Preserve. \n \n\nThis event is NO COST\nNot a WLT member yet\, but would like to be? CLICK HERE.\n\nContact Erika with any questions — elebling@westerlylandtrust.org

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Join Deirdre O’Connor for a slow and easy walk in Wahaneeta Preserve. Forest Bathing is the pleasant practice of spending time in nature for the purpose of enhancing health and happiness. Evidenced based research confirms that time in nature has profound healing benefits for physical and emotional well – being. The term Forest Bathing comes from the Japanese tradition of “shin-rin yoku” literally translated to “bathing in the atmosphere of the forest”. On this walk you will experience and learn about how the regular practice of Forest Bathing can restore health and vitality by strengthening immune function\, lowering stress hormones\, improving mood and sleep\, and stimulating creativity. \n\nRegistration is required. Spots are limited. Please reserve your spot through the form below.\n\n\nFree for WLT members\, $10 for not-yet-members (If you’d like to join WLT\, please click here.)\n\n\nParking is limited please carpool if possible.\n\nDeirdre O’Connor is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy.  Deirdre is delighted to share the Healing power of Nature through Forest Bathing where Nature and our true natures come to know one another. She resides in Westerly\, enjoying birding\, botany\, bicycling and exploring the next cool place to share Forest Bathing. \n  \nThis event is full; however\, if you'd like to add your name to our waiting list\, please do so here: \nJoin Waiting List \n \n

SUMMARY:Westerly Track & Athletic Club: Wahaneeta Trail Race
DESCRIPTION:The Westerly Track & Athletic Club hosts an annual trail race at Wahaneeta Preserve in September. This is the first of four races in WTAC’s Fall Race Series. Runners and walkers are welcome. The terrain of the course is entirely dirt trails\, with some technical single-track. In order to minimize bunching up at the race start\, the course will first run across a short grass field before continuing on double-track for approximately one-half mile. Most of the rest of the course will be on single-track and include challenges such as stream crossings on narrow wooden bridges\, hills\, and rock gardens. During the course of the race\, you will cross streams multiple times\, with most but not all having bridge crossings. The course is very spectator friendly\, as the start/finish is in the same area\, and during the course of the race runners will pass through the start/finish area twice before finishing. \nFor more information and to register for this Westerly Track & Athletic Club event\, please click here.

\n\nRegistration is required. Spots are limited.\n\n\nEach walk is $30 per person which Deirdre has generously pledged to donate to WLT.\n\n\nParking is limited please carpool if possible\n\nDeirdre O’Connor is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy.  Deirdre is delighted to share the Healing power of Nature through Forest Bathing where Nature and our true natures come to know one another.
