second serve

Second Serve Resale strives to lower consumption of new clothing by promoting the benefits of resale.

This nonprofit organization was founded in Westerly, RI, by a dedicated team of volunteers, Amy Hebb, Susan Demovick, and Patti Ghezzi, who were fed up with the fast fashion industry and the increasing amount of wasted clothing. They took note that resale was becoming a big business, and then asked the question, “Could resale profits be redirected to nonprofit organizations?” And that’s just what Second Serve does– they sell donated clothes and contribute a whopping 85% of the proceeds to their nonprofit partners.

In June 2023, the Westerly Land Trust was invited to be a beneficiary of Second Serve’s good work. It is a win for everyone—you get beautiful *like-new* clothes (some still have tags), landfills stay a little less full, and WLT forges ahead in our conservation work, protecting more than 1,700 acres and 25 miles of hiking trails.

To shop Second Serve and learn more about their mission, please visit secondserveresale.org. Once your bag is full, we would be honored if you’d select the Westerly Land Trust as the recipient of 85% of your sale.

Thank you for your mindful and intentional clothing shopping!

Gray Goose Cookery, owned and operated by Suzanne and Bob Lane and located at 93 Watch Hill Road, is a one stop cooking shop where you’ll find every kitchen tool imaginable and a particularly generous deal: if you make a donation to the Westerly Land Trust while at their shop, they will sharpen your knives for free! Sharp knives are safe knives, so be sure to bring yours to Gray Goose Cookery at any point in the year (but this is particularly important around the turkey carving holidays). Bon appetit!

Solstice greetings from the Westerly Land Trust! ❄️

For more than 5,000 years, people across the Northern Hemisphere have met the Winter Solstice with lights, feasts, and a shared sense of community. This impulse—to gather against the encroaching dark—is a calling innate to humankind. This year, that ancient tradition meets a celestial spectacle: on the night of the 21st, you might catch a glimpse of the Ursid meteor shower.

There is a unique magic to the solstice sky, made even more profound when punctuated by a multitude of shooting stars. Watching this display, it is easy to feel simultaneously tiny and boundless—a perspective that leaves us feeling deeply grounded. 🌠

It is that same sense of connection—to the earth and to one another—that drives the Westerly Land Trust. Our work is about more than just the land we conserve; it is about knitting together the community that enjoys it. Whether you find your peace by connecting with neighbors or disconnecting in the quiet of the woods, WLT provides a space for you to recharge.

As you reflect on these values this season, we invite you to join our efforts to steward the land and curate the programs that weave us together. Beyond the rush of the holidays, I hope you find a moment to stop and be still—perhaps even long enough to see a shooting star.

Thank you for your partnership in our land conservation and programmatic work. From all of us at the Westerly Land Trust, we wish you a Peaceful Solstice, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous New Year.
