Avondale Farm Preserve

Avondale Farm Preserve, approximately 50 acres in size, was acquired by the Westerly Land Trust in September 1998 as our first property. This preserve consists of coastal sand plain grassland, freshwater ponds and wetlands, brushland, and salt marsh with two tidal inlets from frontage on the Pawcatuck River estuary.

There is a 0.6-mile paved road system used for passive recreation. This preserve is being managed to remove exotic vegetation and restore native grassland. A portion of this preserve (located within the center of the 0.6-mile paved loop) has been farmed for many years. The farming operation continues to this day as it is an important part of conservation, agricultural, and historic values.

Trails: In addition to the paved 0.6 mile loop road for recreation, there are walking trails along stone walls within the grassland.

Crayfish are found in fresh water in many places around the world. They have a hard and protective exoskeleton that sheds as they grow. A single tail flip can propel them through the water when they feel threatened, perfectly demonstrated by our little friend in the video.
