Champlin Farm Preserve
Champlin Farm Preserve on Boombridge Road is 90.57-acres of forest, streams, and prime agricultural soils along the nationally designated Wild and Scenic Pawcatuck River. It was permanently protected in October 2024 and is the Westerly Land Trust’s largest acquisition since Dr. John Champlin Glacier Park in 2004.
Historically, alfalfa and corn were grown and cattle grazed on two fields which remain cleared today. This land, with its rich soil, is exceptionally important, as Rhode Island’s farmland is the most expensive and hard to come by of any state. According to Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), 80% of Rhode Island’s farmland has been lost to development since 1940, more than any other state during the same time. By preserving this piece, WLT can open agricultural opportunities to local farmers without passing on financial burdens.
Through this acquisition, the Champlin Farm Preserve will be kept in agricultural production and protected from development, a very real threat given the high value of farmland in Rhode Island. In line with the Westerly Land Trust’s mission and Rhode Island’s state guide plan, preserving parcels like this will fortify a natural flood plain and protect the Pawcatuck River’s water quality, both important amidst climate change’s imminent threats. In addition, the creation of a trail system will offer enhanced public land and water access for health, education, and environmental immersion.
We look forward to sharing this land with the community. Please check back for updates on the Champlin Farm Preserve’s trail system.
