Ice Rink
The two parcels which today hold the Washington Trust Skating Center, 61 and 85 Main Street, came under the Westerly Land Trust’s purview in 2005 and 2006 respectively, thanks to a capital investment from the Royce Family Fund (RFF). As a complement to its conservation mission, WLT has partnered with RFF in Downtown Westerly since 2004 to preserve and revitalize culturally and historically significant properties. The development of the ice rink aligned with the Land Trust’s goal to provide open space and recreational opportunities for the community, while conserving land along the Pawcatuck River. In the two decades since, significant investments were made to maximize the operation of the ice rink and to create a community resource enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The Ocean Community YMCA expertly managed and operated the rink for thirteen years. In September 2024, both parcels, all equipment, furniture and fixtures were transferred back to RFF and then sold to the Town for one dollar. The Town has signaled their intent to maintain and manage the community’s ice rink into the future.
The 12,000 square foot ice skating rink is complete with a Zamboni, skate rentals and sharpening, restrooms and food concessions. The rink is open 7 days a week from late November through March and offers public skating, party rentals, school rentals, skate rentals, skating lessons, and hockey.
